The case sits low on slim tapered legs finished in black, which lifts the walnut clear of the floor and shows the whole depth of the box. Three wide drawers fill the left half, their fronts cut from stock with strong wandering figure that carries from one drawer to the next. The right half is open and split by two shelves set at different depths, so a tall row of books stands in one bay while flat stacks lie in another.

The carcase, the shelves and the drawer fronts are solid wood. Nothing is veneered and no grain is printed on the surface. Joints are cut and fitted at the bench, and the figure is chosen board by board before the drawer fronts are laid out.
