A circle holds a scene differently from a rectangle. The eye travels around it instead of stopping at corners, which is why these reliefs suit landscapes and single figures. Each one is carved in relief from solid timber, then finished so the cut faces catch light at a different angle from the flat ground behind them.

Four diameters are made: 24, 30, 36 and 42 inches, all about 3 inches deep. For a spot above a console or a bedside, 24 or 30 inches is usually right. Take 36 or 42 for a stairwell or a wall with nothing else on it. A useful rule is to keep the panel between half and two thirds the width of whatever furniture sits below it. The subjects vary a good deal, from carved landscapes with layered depth to single medallion forms cut in one plane, so pick by how much shadow you want on the wall.

Before ordering, remember that a solid wood panel is much heavier than a printed canvas of the same size. The wall anchor matters more than it would for a poster, and a stud or a proper masonry fixing is worth the extra minute.
