Start with the wall, not the sculpture
The most common sizing mistake is falling for a piece first and then looking for a wall to fit it. Reverse the order. Before you shop, write down:
- Usable wall width, measured after subtracting door casings, cabinetry and any fireplace surround.
- Ceiling height. An 8-foot ceiling, a 10-foot ceiling and a double-height wall are three different sizing problems.
- Furniture below. A sofa, a console or nothing at all changes which rule applies.
- Viewing distance. How far back the nearest seating or walkway is from the wall.
- Light direction. Which way the windows face and when the wall catches light, since this changes how carved relief reads through the day.

Which size fits your furniture
Above a sofa, sideboard or console, aim for about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width. On an open wall, fill 60–75% of the wall width. Here is how that maps to the wide pieces above:

Carved relief reads larger than flat art of the same width, because the shadows inside the carving add visual size. With 3 inches of depth, you can often choose from the smaller end of these ranges.
Tall panels: work from the ceiling
The usual rule hangs art with its center 57–60 inches from the floor. It stops working for very tall panels. A 72-inch panel centered at 57 inches reaches 93 inches, only 3 inches under a standard 8-foot ceiling. An 80-inch panel would not fit at all.
- 8-foot ceilings: choose a shorter size of the Chisel-Cut Contour Lines panel, such as 28″ × 56″ or 32″ × 64″, so the top keeps clear space.
- Taller ceilings, foyers and stairwells: the 36″ × 72″ and 40″ × 80″ sizes read as architectural elements rather than decoration.
Why viewing distance changes the math
Two rooms can share the same wall width and still need different sizes, because apparent size depends on how far back you stand. A piece that commands attention four feet away in a hallway can look small on a wall 20 feet from the sofa in an open-plan room. As a rule of thumb, if the nearest seating is more than about 12 feet from the wall, go up one size from what the wall measurement alone suggests.

- Get a second person. Long pieces are awkward to lift and level alone.
- Locate wall studs with a stud finder and mark the centers. Aim to span at least two studs.
- Use the mounting hardware supplied with the piece. Most of our large panels hang on a concealed cleat, which spreads the weight along the wall.
- On plaster or masonry walls, pre-drill and use fixings rated for the weight. Do not drive screws straight into plaster.
- If you are unsure about the wall, ask a professional installer.

Lighting matters more at this scale because there is more surface for it to work across. Side light from a window, or a picture light angled onto the piece, creates the shadow lines that make carved relief read as three-dimensional. Warm bulbs (2700K–3000K) keep the wood tone accurate. Avoid a flat downlight directly above the piece, which flattens the carving.
