About this piece
Two pieces of furniture share one silhouette here. On the left a carved column climbs the wall, throwing off four shelves the way a trunk throws branches, each one wide enough for books, bowls and a small plant. On the right that column becomes a low bench that runs out under the screen, its underside opened into a row of arches so the whole thing looks lighter than it weighs.
The column and the bench are worked from solid wood blocks laminated up and then carved back until the arches and hollows appear. Nothing is veneered over, so the grain follows the shape it was cut from and moves as the form twists. The surface is sealed lightly, leaving the ridges where the tool left them still readable under your fingertips.
Because of the height and the reach, it comes to you as separate elements, boxed flat and protected at the carved edges. You join them with the supplied fittings following the illustrated guide, which takes two people and very little time. Message us mid build if a joint refuses to line up and we will sort it with you.
