Wall Art for Entryway: How to Size, Hang and Light a Statement Piece
Quick answer: on an open entryway wall, choose art that fills 60–75% of the wall's width and hang it with its center 57–60 inches from the floor. Above a console or bench, size the art to about two-thirds of the furniture's width and hang it 6–10 inches above the surface.
An entryway is not a living room. You see it up close, standing, for a few seconds while you take off your shoes. There is often no sofa to anchor the scale, and the light swings from bright at the door to dim in the evening. That is why entryway wall art needs its own rules for size, height and lighting.
Below you will find a sizing chart, hanging heights, layouts for different entry types, and the carved solid wood pieces from our wall art collection that fit each wall width.

Entryway wall art size chart
Measure the usable wall width, then find the closest row. This chart is for an open wall with no furniture underneath. The last column lists carved pieces whose sizes fall inside the 60–75% range.
| Entry wall | Art width (60–75%) | Sizes that fit |
|---|---|---|
| 36″ narrow | 22″–27″ | Curling Wave Scroll, 24″ size |
| 48″ standard | 29″–36″ | Curling Wave Scroll, 30″ or 36″ size |
| 60″ wide | 36″–45″ | Undertow 40″ × 20″, Flame 39″ × 20″, or Curling Wave Scroll 36″ or 42″ |
| 72″+ foyer | 43″–54″ | Undertow 46″ or 52″ wide, Flame 47″ × 22″, or a grouping such as the Mountain Wall Art Set of Four |
Sizes are the widths listed on each product page. Some pieces, including the Flame Wall Sculpture, can be made in custom dimensions. Contact our team if your wall falls between sizes.
Carved relief reads larger than flat art
A carved panel with real depth looks bigger than a flat print of the same width, because the shadows inside the carving add visual size. The panels in our wall art collection are 3 inches deep. As a rule of thumb, deep relief lets you choose from the smaller end of the ranges above.
How high to hang art in an entryway
- Open wall: center the piece 57–60 inches from the floor. Measure to the middle of the piece, not the top edge.
- Above a console: put the bottom edge 6–10 inches above the tabletop and size the art to about two-thirds of the console's width. A 48″ console pairs with art 32″–36″ wide. Browse our solid wood console tables if you are still choosing one.
- Above a bench: treat an entryway storage bench or a shoe bench like a console. Use the same two-thirds width and 6–10 inch gap.
- Several pieces: keep one center line and leave 3–5 inches between pieces. On a narrow wall, a vertical stack of two or three works better than one wide piece.
Pick one rule and stick with it. If furniture sits under the art, use the furniture rule. If the wall is open, use the wall-width rule. Do not split the difference.

Layouts that work by entryway type
- Narrow entry or hallway: one compact piece near the low end of the range. The Wall Sculpture Carved as a Curling Wave Scroll starts at 24″ × 24″ and is made to hang by a door or along a hallway.
- Standard entry: one statement piece, centered on the wall or on the console below it.
- Wide foyer: one wide, low panel such as Undertow, or a set. A grouping should have an odd number of pieces so it looks balanced.
- Entry with a mirror: hang the sculpture on a different wall so the two do not compete.
Why wood works in an entryway, and what to plan for
- Close-up viewing. Carved texture and grain read clearly at arm's length, which is how most people see an entryway.
- Changing light. Grain and carved shadows shift as light moves through the door during the day.
- High traffic. A solid wood panel mounted flat tolerates the occasional bump better than a stretched canvas or a glass-fronted frame.
- Tone. Darker walnut shows carved shadow lines clearly at close range. In a dim hallway, a lighter honey tone such as the Honey Tone Tree Web Wall Art reads better.
Three things to plan for. Solid wood is heavy, so the wall fixing matters (see the mounting section below). Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can change the natural finish over time, so skip a wall the sun hits for hours. And each piece is made to order, so grain and color vary slightly from piece to piece. Our care guide covers dusting and oiling.
Carved wood wall art that fits an entryway
Wall Sculpture Carved as a Curling Wave Scroll
One continuous length of solid walnut that hooks around on itself and ends in a tight spiral. The deep scoop at the wide end holds shadow.
- Sizes: 24″ × 24″ up to 60″ × 60″, 3″ deep
- From: $2,250
- Best for: narrow and standard entry walls, by a door or along a hallway
Undertow Carved Wood Wall Art Panel in Walnut
Carved grain runs across the panel like a river current, broken by one teardrop opening. The darker timber lets it hold a big wall on its own.
- Sizes: 40″ × 20″ up to 76″ × 38″, 3″ deep
- From: $2,960
- Best for: wide foyer walls
Solid Wood Flame Wall Sculpture
An abstract flame carved from solid wood. The flowing silhouette draws the eye upward and shifts with the light through the day.
- Sizes: 39″ × 20″ up to 79″ × 26″, 3″ thick
- From: $2,068
- Best for: wide walls, or above a console; custom sizes available

Mount it right and light it for evening
Fix it for the weight. Carved panels here hang on a concealed cleat, so no hardware shows. A solid wood panel is much heavier than a printed canvas, so fix the cleat into a stud or use anchors rated for the weight on the product page.
Float it off the wall. Where your mount allows, keep about half an inch of gap behind the piece. Light then falls behind it and shadow builds under the raised carving, so it looks less flat.
Plan for evening light. If the door lets in strong daylight, add a small picture light or an angled LED strip so the piece does not go dark after sunset. Backlighting emphasizes the silhouette. Front-angled light emphasizes carved texture.

Entryway wall art FAQ
How big should wall art be in an entryway?
On an open wall, fill 60–75% of its width. A 36″ wall suits art about 22″–27″ wide, and a 48″ wall suits art about 29″–36″ wide. Above a console or bench, aim for about two-thirds of the furniture's width.
How high should I hang art in an entryway?
Put the center of the piece 57–60 inches from the floor. If it hangs above a console or bench, put the bottom edge 6–10 inches above the surface instead.
What wall art works for a narrow entryway?
One compact piece near the low end of the size range, such as the 24″ size of the Curling Wave Scroll, or a vertical stack of two or three smaller pieces spaced 3–5 inches apart.
Does wood wall art work in a dark entryway?
Yes. A lighter, honey-toned wood reads better in a dim hallway, and a small picture light or angled LED strip keeps the carved relief visible after dark.
Is carved solid wood wall art heavy? How is it mounted?
It is much heavier than a canvas. Our carved panels hang on a concealed cleat. Fix the cleat into a stud or use anchors rated for the weight listed on the product page.
Can wood wall art fade or change color in the sun?
Prolonged direct sunlight can change the natural finish of wood, so avoid a wall the sun hits for hours. Dust with a soft cloth and condition the wood with a light coat of furniture oil once or twice a year. See the care guide.
Can I order a custom size?
Some pieces, including the Solid Wood Flame Wall Sculpture, are available in custom dimensions. Contact our team to discuss proportions and pricing for your wall.
