Wood Grain Turned Into Ripples, an Organic Wall Sculpture

An irregular outline, then ring after ring stepping inward until the layers close around an off centre opening. These are not circles. They wobble, pinch and widen the way water rings do when something drops through them, and one side rolls forward while the other falls back.

Each ring is cut from solid wood, blocks joined and then carved down so the steps flow into one another instead of stacking like plywood. Sanding runs across the layers, which is what gives the edges that soft rolled feel under your hand. The pale walnut tone and the straight grain travelling through every ring are the material itself beneath a clear finish. Carving starts once the order arrives.

It works best where light comes in low and from the side, because that is when the rings throw shadows into each other.
