Pierced Butterfly Wall Art, Backlit and Made to Order

Four full, rounded wings open out from a knotted center, each one carved through with teardrop and almond openings that let the wall breathe between them. The veins between the openings swell and taper like real wing ribs. In this photograph a warm light sits behind the piece, so every opening glows and a soft halo traces the outline onto the wall.

The butterfly is built from solid wood blocks joined together, then carved through from the face and rounded off at every edge until the wings feel plump rather than flat. The wood is heavily figured, and the finish is worked in rather than painted on, so the swirl of the grain runs right across both wings and stays plainly visible. Each butterfly is carved after you order, which means the grain pattern is yours alone.

Because the openings leave slender bridges of wood, the piece ships in sections with those areas fully supported, and that also keeps the shipping cost fair.
