One Walnut Block, Hollowed Into a Wall Sculpture

Walnut this figured usually ends up as a tabletop. Here it has been hollowed instead: scooped basins, a raised ridge that curls over like a wave about to break, and a clean round opening near the center that lets the wall show through. Two horns lift off the top edge while the lower half melts back into a soft, spooned hollow.

The form comes from solid wood blocks joined and then cut away until only the shape remains. Because the carving cuts across the grain at every angle, the figure keeps changing direction along the surface, dark ribbons running into pale ones. The finish is worked into the wood rather than laid on top, which is why the whole thing reads as one continuous piece of timber instead of a coated shell. Each one is carved to order, so the grain map is never repeated.

Sculptures like this travel in parts, packed so the thin edges and the raised horn are protected. Assembly takes a few minutes with the hardware and instructions supplied, and the hanging point sits behind the heaviest mass so the piece rests flat and level.
