Nested Ovals in a Carved Walnut Wall Sculpture

Layers of wood fold in on themselves like heavy cloth caught mid movement, each one wrapping tighter than the last until they close around a dark oval opening near the upper right. The outer edge waves rather than runs straight, and the lower third gathers into a broad soft pleat that pushes the piece away from the wall.

It is built from solid wood blocks joined into one mass, then carved down through the layers so the folds are cut, never bent or laminated into shape. Undersides and inner curves get the same sanding as the front face, since the form is seen from below and from the side as often as head on. The finish deepens the chocolate tones and lets the ribbon of figure run unbroken across the folds.
