Hand-Carved Wave Relief in Walnut and Blackened Wood

Two long swells run the full length of this board, one crest chasing the other. The upper wave is left in pale honey wood with the figure streaming along its curl; beneath it a second wave is blackened and finely ridged, so the two colors braid past each other like water folding over itself. The relief stands well clear of the backing plank and casts a real shadow across it.

Both waves are carved from solid wood blocks joined together, then shaped by hand until the edges thin down to a knife line at the crest. The blackened sections are worked so the grain still shows through the dark surface rather than disappearing under it, and the pale sections are sanded to a soft sheen that follows the curve. Every board is cut to order, which is why no two crests carry the same figure.

The wave sections and the backing plank travel separately, packed so the fine crest edges arrive intact and the freight stays reasonable for a piece this long.
