Hand-Carved Feather Relief, Barb by Barb in Solid Wood

Run a hand across it and you feel every barb. Fine grooves are cut outward from the central shaft, each one lifting and dipping so the vane looks split and ruffled in places, exactly the way a real feather separates. The quill runs the full length and finishes in a slim tip that pulls clear of the surface.

The blank is made from solid wood blocks joined into one thick slab, then carved down until the feather emerges from it. The pale honey tone is the wood itself. Nothing is painted over the surface, and the finish is thin enough that grain still reads through the carving. Every piece is made to order, so the figure that lands on your feather belongs to that board alone.

Plan the height so the shaft sits near eye level, where the barb work is easiest to read. Because the tip and the thinner edges are delicate, the piece travels disassembled and well padded.
