A crescent moon leans back into a bank of clouds, and the clouds are cut in stacked layers so each one throws a shadow onto the one behind it. Tiny pierced points scatter across the open sky like stars, and in this photograph a warm light sits behind the relief, tracing the rim of the moon and the ridge of every cloud with a soft halo. It reads as a night scene rather than a picture of one.
The scene is carved from solid wood blocks joined into a single panel, layer by layer, then set inside a matching wood frame with a slim shadow gap around the edge. The surface is finished so the natural grain runs straight through the sky and the cloudbanks, which is why the moon looks like it grew out of the board instead of being applied to it. Each piece is made once you order it.
It ships flat and in sections, which keeps the fine star piercings and the frame corners safe on the road and keeps shipping costs down.
