Wood Aquarium Stand by Tank Size: 10, 20, 40, 55 & 75 Gallon Guide

Pet-store stand aisles are labeled by gallons. That's the wrong first number to shop by. What actually has to match is footprint: the tank's outside length and width against the stand's width and depth. Two tanks both called "20 gallon" are not the same footprint - a 20-high runs roughly 24" × 12", while a 20-long runs closer to 30" × 12". Manufacturers vary these dimensions too, so treat every figure below as a starting estimate, not a spec for your specific tank.

Every wood aquarium stand in Burlholt's aquarium stand collection is solid hardwood - no veneer, no MDF - and every size across all six product lines is listed at 16" deep. That single number is the hard constraint of this whole collection: if your tank's outside depth is more than 16", it will overhang, and none of these forms are the right stand for that tank.

How to Size a Wood Aquarium Stand

Every product page in this collection describes the piece as built to carry the weight of a filled glass tank, and asks buyers to confirm the weight rating against their filled setup. None of the six product pages currently publish a specific number in pounds to confirm against - only the underlying construction facts (solid hardwood, no MDF, no veneer) and a 10-year structural warranty on the joinery.

If your tank is large or your stand will be wall-mounted, email hello@burlholt.com with your tank's filled weight before ordering, rather than assuming a rating that isn't published.

How to Match Your Tank Size to the Stand

  1. Measure the tank you actually own - outside length × width, including the frame. Published charts are nominal; glass thickness and rim design shift the real number.
  2. Stand width needs to be at least the tank's length. Stand depth needs to be at least the tank's width. Every Burlholt size in this collection is 16" deep - so depth is fixed, width is what you're choosing.
  3. Pick height for how you want to view it: roughly 51"H for standing eye-level, 31"H for coffee-table height beside seating, 25"H for the wall-mounted frame, or 1.5"T for a hung floating shelf.
  4. Estimate filled weight before you commit to a wall mount: freshwater alone runs close to 8.3 lb per gallon, before glass, substrate and rockwork add more. Don't guess a stand's capacity from that math alone - see the weight-rating note above.

Commonly published approximate footprints (these vary by manufacturer - always measure your own tank): a 10-gallon runs around 20" × 10"; a 20-gallon high around 24" × 12"; a 20-gallon long around 30" × 12"; a 29-gallon usually shares that same ~30" × 12" footprint at a taller height; a 40-breeder runs around 36" × 18"; a 55-gallon around 48" × 13"; a 75-gallon around 48" × 18".

Wood Aquarium Stand Sizes by Tank Type

10-Gallon Class: About 20" × 10"

A footprint this small clears 16" depth with room to spare. The question is just width: a tank around 20" long wants at least a 20" top so it sits fully on the wood, not overhanging an edge.

How to choose: the rustic cabinet's smaller sizes suit a true ~20" tank at standing height in a corner. The floating shelf's smallest sizes work as the hung alternative, if the wall can take the load - see the weight-rating note above before you commit to mounting it.

Listed match: Rustic Cabinet Living Room Corner - sizes 20", 24", 30", 35", 39", 43"W, all 51"H × 16"D, from $1,680. Or the Cozy Living Room Rustic Floating Shelf - sizes 18", 25", 31", 37", 41", 49", 61"W, all 1.5"T × 16"D, from $560.

20-Gallon High: About 24" × 12"

Depth around 12" clears 16" easily. Length around 24" wants at least a 24-25" top - not the smallest 18-20" size.

How to choose: the rustic cabinet's mid sizes work at standing height; the wall-mounted frame's smallest size works if you want it off the floor; the coffee-table's smallest size works if it sits inside your seating group and you don't mind extra wood margin around the glass.

Listed match: rustic cabinet (sizes above), or Wall Mounted Frame Living Room Office - sizes 25", 31", 39", 43", 47"W, all 25"H × 16"D, from $1,260.

20-Gallon Long and 29-Gallon: About 30" × 12"

Same rough footprint, different heights available depending on the class of tank. Width needs to clear roughly 30"; depth at ~12" clears 16" with margin.

How to choose: the rustic cabinet's 30" size fits at standing height. The coffee-table form starts at 35"W - more wood margin than the tank strictly needs, which reads as a design choice rather than a problem as long as the tank sits centred and fully on the top.

Listed match: rustic cabinet 30"W, or Elegant Coffee Table With Built - sizes 35", 39", 43", 47", 51", 55"W, all 31"H × 16"D, from $2,080.

Tanks Around 36-40 Gallons: Check Depth First

This is where gallon labels stop being useful on their own. A 40-breeder - popular specifically because it's a shorter, roomier footprint - runs close to 36" × 18" outside. That 18" depth is 2" past every listed size in this collection. Don't put a true 40-breeder on any of these tops; it will overhang.

Not every 36-40 gallon class tank shares that depth, though - some run shallower. Measure your specific tank's outside depth before choosing a size here. If it's 16" or under, the smaller canopy and stylish-cabinet sizes (both start at 39"W) and the coffee-table's mid sizes can work; if it's over 16", none of these stands are the right fit for that tank.

Listed match (only if your tank's depth is confirmed ≤16"): With Canopy Living Room - sizes 39", 45", 51", 57", 65", 71"W, all 51"H × 16"D, from $2,600. Or coffee-table 39"W (see sizes above).

55-Gallon: About 48" × 13"

Length around 48" needs a listed width of at least 51" to sit fully supported. Depth around 13" clears 16" with margin. A 75-gallon shares roughly that same 48" length but typically runs closer to 18" deep - too deep for this collection, same as the 40-breeder.

How to choose: the canopy or stylish-living-space forms at 51"W and up, at standing height. The coffee-table's larger sizes (up to 55"W) also clear the length at seating height, if you want the tank lower and don't need cabinet storage below.

Listed match: canopy 51"W and up (sizes above), or Elegant Stylish Living Space - sizes 39", 45", 51", 57", 65", 71"W, all 51"H × 16"D, from $3,000.

Longer Tanks: Up to 71" Listed Width

The canopy and stylish-living-space forms both run up to 71"W at 51"H × 16"D - use them for a tank longer than 55" (as long as its depth is still 16" or under), or simply for more wood showing past a shorter tank. A wider listed size does not mean a deeper tank fits; 16" of depth is the ceiling across every size in this collection, from the smallest to the largest.

Which Tanks Are Too Deep for a 16" Stand?

Tank Typical depth Fits 16"D?
40-breeder ~18" No
75-gallon ~18" No
Any tank you've measured at over 16" deep >16" No

If your tank falls in this table, put it on the floor rather than a shelf or frame - a deeper-rated stand or a custom-built base is the right call, not a 16"-deep top with the tank hanging off the back edge.

Wood Aquarium Stand Sizing FAQ

Does a wider Burlholt aquarium stand mean it can hold a deeper tank?

No. Every size across all six product lines in this collection - from the smallest floating shelf to the largest canopy cabinet - is listed at the same 16" depth. Width only tells you how long a tank can sit on the top; depth is fixed regardless of which size or form you choose.

Will a 40-breeder tank fit any of these stands?

No. A 40-breeder's outside depth runs close to 18", which is 2" past every listed size in this collection. Putting it on a 16"-deep top means the tank overhangs the back edge - don't do this regardless of how sturdy the wood is, since the risk is the overhang, not the stand's strength.

Is there a published weight rating for these stands?

Not a specific number in pounds, on any of the six product pages. They describe the build as solid hardwood rated to carry a filled tank and ask you to confirm the rating against your setup, but no figure is given. For a large or wall-mounted setup, email Burlholt with your tank's filled weight before ordering.

My tank is labeled "40 gallon" but I'm not sure if it's a breeder - how do I check?

Measure the tank's outside depth (front to back) with a tape measure, rather than relying on the gallon number alone. If it comes in at 16" or under, the smaller sizes in the canopy or coffee-table lines can work. If it measures close to 18", it's very likely a breeder-style tank and none of the forms in this collection are deep enough.

Which form should I pick if I just want the smallest, simplest option?

The floating shelf, starting at 18"W - it's a 1.5" solid slab with no surrounding structure, the least expensive form in the collection, and the best fit for a small tank where the wood itself is the visual statement rather than a case around the glass.
